Securing a Hospital's Digital Infrastructure

A hospital approached us with a critical need to secure their digital infrastructure. They provided us with two IP addresses and access to two web applications, requesting a thorough assessment to identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities. We were to approach the task in complete black box setup with no other information available for us.

Our penetration testing team conducted a detailed security assessment of the provided IP addresses and web applications. We focused on identifying vulnerabilities that could compromise sensitive patient data and disrupt hospital operations.
Initial Reconnaissance: We began with an extensive reconnaissance phase, using tools like Nmap and Nessus to map the network and identify active services and potential entry points.
Web Application Testing: We employed Burp Suite Pro to perform a comprehensive security assessment of the two web applications, focusing on issues related to tampering another patient's data and authentication issues.
Vulnerability Exploitation: Our team used Metasploit and custom scripts to exploit identified vulnerabilities, simulating real-world attacks to evaluate their impact and discover further security weaknesses.
Manual Testing: In addition to automated tools, we performed manual testing to identify complex vulnerabilities that might be missed by automated scans, particularly in business logic and authentication mechanisms.
Detailed Analysis and Reporting: We documented all findings, including a critical vulnerability that could allow unauthorized access to sensitive patient data, a high-risk vulnerability affecting the integrity of the web applications, and multiple medium, low, and informative vulnerabilities.

Our assessment revealed a total of 17 vulnerabilities:
1 Critical vulnerability
1 High vulnerability
4 Medium vulnerabilities
12 Low and Informative vulnerabilities
The Critical and High severity vulnerabilities had to be communicated as soon as found due to the risk they were presenting, so our team had to provide mitigation steps half-way through the test phase. All found vulnerabilities were documented and for the Critical and High ones we also provided custom scripts to help reproduction.

We provided the hospital with a detailed report outlining all discovered vulnerabilities, their potential impact, and comprehensive mitigation strategies. The critical and high-risk vulnerabilities were addressed immediately, significantly enhancing the security of the hospital’s digital infrastructure. The hospital implemented our recommended security measures, which not only protected patient data but also ensured compliance with healthcare regulations. This proactive approach has bolstered the hospital’s defense against cyber threats, ensuring a safer environment for patient care.
